Fathers, mothers, grandparents, and children can get a lovely, sentimental mother's day gift, a hand-cut silhouette made by Texas native, Cindi Harwood Rose, who happens to be the world's foremost silhouette artist.
An authentic silhouette is made by a skilled scissorgraphist who looks and cuts directly out of thin, black paper, dark as India Ink.  Rose, uses iris surgical scissors and archival French antique paper, something that has added investment value to her heirloom silhouettes. Her silhouettes are mounted on archival 5 x 7 mats, to be treasured forever.
Silhouette profiling was popular in the 1700s and 1800s before photography.  The top artists would be in demand, and they would be commissioned to travel to capture a likeness in a moment.  No one wanted to wait for a lengthily portrait, and the paper portrait being black captured the moment and time better.
According to Peggy McClard, who has America's most prestigious historic silhouette collection and antique gallery, Cindi Harwood Rose, is a premier silhouettest.
This art, sometimes called a shade,  is difficult to master, and today is rarely seen.  Some estimate that there are somewhere between 25 and 40 real silhouette artists in the world. Cindi's work is intricate and realistic, yet flattering.  It takes more natural art talent than drawing a portrait.
Cindi used to draw portraits for Walt Disney, before she tried her hand at silhouette cutting.  While studying journalism and fine art at The University of Texas, in Austin, she amazed her professors with her talents.  None of them could cut perfect profiles out of paper, without a sketch first.
Harwood-Rose's work is finely embellished in the French style.  She can put in details of collars, bows, buttons, ruffles, ribbons, mustaches, hats, pearls, wedding veils, crosses, and yes, plain T-shirts and cowlicks, too.
Cindi found her work in demand, and was commissioned all over the world to cut her famous silhouettes, for royalty, celebrities, common-folk, professionals, department stores, museums, galleries, weddings, and special events.  She found herself in London cutting silhouettes for BBC TV and the queen,  in Israel for Golda Mier and Abba Eban, doing Muhamed Ali, Sammy Davis, Mama Cass,  and Liberace in the amusement parks, Tony Bennet, Elvis Costello and Barbara Bush, in Houston, and Dr. Michael DeBakey for a private commission.
In 1982, Cindi Harwood made the world speed and accurate  silhouette art record in San Antonio for the Express News Paper, 132 beautiful silhouettes cut of subjects in sixty minutes.
Later she married Dr. Franklin Rose, a board-certified plastic surgeon and had two children, Erica (26) and Benjamin (25), both in law school at University of Houston. She has been featured as an wonderful artist in Woman's Day, Vogue, Luxury Living, Muscle and Fitness, and Pet Talk.
Cindi can also do pet silhouettes from photos, but ususally those are done by e-mail at Cincere@wt.net with profile photos.
Cindi Rose is ranked by the Guild of American Papercutters as the premier silhouette artist. www.papercutters,info/  Unlike other silhouette artists, she does not make everyone look the same, her accuracy in capturing a profile is unmatched. Rose, can even fix hair in the pictures, should the person have a "bad hair day".
